Educating the Community!

LCCS/WHOSGLUTENFREE

This past January, we were asked to become a community partner and to participate a pilot program for the Learning Community Charter School in Jersey City. This new pilot program is called STREAM (science/tech/reading/engineering/art/math) which is inquiry/ problem based learning. Presently the school has has seven classes after school working on different project designs. Students investigate a real life problem. Then take the lead and design through collaboration, exposure, understanding, interviews, brainstorming, a prototype and final presentation which will address the problem:

"Creating more awareness of what's in the food we eat... ."

WHOS Gluten Free had the honor of teaching 4th grade STREAM students about healthy foods and GMOs. We believe that partnering with the community and teaching children about eating right are essential for a healthier future.

We presented the students with information about food preservatives, the most common genetically-modified organisms, and nutrition labels. The students were surprised to learn about chemicals, like pesticides, and how even trace amounts of them in our foods have negative effects. We explained why to look for organic and NON-GMO labels. We reviewed nutrition labels of the most common GMO packaged foods in their diet. These foods included cereal, chips, cookies, popcorn, and candy. The students questioned the long words they didn't know in the ingredients.

We then showed them the nutrition labels of the cereals we frequently use for our products. The students were relieved that there are packaged foods out there with natural ingredients that they can read and list in one hand. They were also able to enjoy some of our organic, NON-GMO treats themselves! We hope that they take the information they learned and make positive food choices as they grow up. Overall we had a blast questioning and answering these super bright students and look forward to working with them again.
